Durham Rescue Mission assists with permanent supportive housing

The Durham Rescue Mission provides vocational training, food, long term shelter, clothing, biblical counsel, job placement, education, vocational training, permanent supportive housing, medical, vision and dental support, and safe shelter to the residents of Durham NC. The mission is the largest long term and oldest shelter in the area, and serves over 300 women, men and children every day, 365 days a year. This is made possible with the help of donations from organizations, individuals, bequests, grants, foundations and without any government funding.

Founded by Dr. and Mrs. Ernie Mills in 1974, the Durham Rescue Mission now own three thrift stores and as a result are able to provide over 60 jobs to the needy and homeless. The mission is open to those in need 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. The mission hosts four annual community events each year and the goal of these gatherings is appreciate the community by helping the working poor and homeless. These events are only made possible with the help of their growing team of volunteers, residents, donors and staff.

Homeless men have sought and received help from the Durham Rescue Mission ever since its inception in 1974. The goals of their programs for men are to help them realize that God loves them, and they if they want, they can lead a productive life with Christ.  Men seeking shelter at the Durham Rescue Mission can expect to receive a safe shelter, employment assistance, financial planning, Biblical counseling, clean clothing and three meals per day. There are over 290 beds available at the mission and 200 or so are currently in use.

The Durham Rescue Mission welcomes mothers with children and families and gives them a safe, compassionate Christian environment. Women and children can expect to find clean clothing, daycare, three meals a day, housekeeping/parenting instruction, GED or equivalent education, Biblical counsel, employment assistance, safe colorful playground and vocational training. Operation Warm Shelter by the Durham Rescue Mission is geared towards those left out in the cold winters and inclement weather conditions. The program offers free transportation and housing to the mission, and is made possible by the staff and residents canvassing the area.
