Baton Rouge Rental Assistance Programs Can Help with Security Deposits and Rent Payments
Despite having such a high demand for low-income rent assistance, Baton Rouge actually has a very limited supply of aid for security deposits and rent payments. This is one of the more underserved populations that we have experienced, making it that much more important that you know what help is available as well as how to gain access to rental assistance programs.
The Baton Rouge Government Community Development website is outdated, with some sections only as current as 2002. We found that much of the support has since been closed out as funding for some programs has been abandoned.
There are existing programs though that do provide rental assistance, and they have been continuously funded for many years. This makes them a good bet for the future, since you don’t want to be evicted because you are promised help that never materializes.
Individuals may be eligible for some programs. Single mothers with multiple children are typically most likely to be matched with available rental assistance funding.

A case manager will meet with you to determine your needs and evaluate how they can assist. This often results in cash payments made to a landlord for either back rent, or for security deposit assistance on a new apartment. Even electricity and water bill help can be provided in addition to rental assistance. Call 225-336-8700 to schedule a consultation with a case manager.
Often times this can be done without utilizing transitional housing, but this can be an option if you have been out of work for some time also. Transitional housing rents average $475-575 a month with a $300 security deposit, and you may stay up to 18 months if you have children.
Salvation Army Social Services
Salvation Army Social Services also provides assistance, but it is only for the most extreme cases. This means you must have already received an eviction notice before you may be considered for help. It ensures that only those who are in imminent danger of becoming homeless will receive the limited rent assistance funds that the agency has to distribute.
The entire package of aid may include help with back rent, up to $50 towards utilities to prevent disconnection, clothing vouchers and groceries. Since these are some of the biggest expenses of a lower income household, you could benefit by getting back on your feet and having your basic needs met. By avoiding an eviction, you can avoid the severe financial hardship that often results.
