Past due rent and security deposit grants paid through NM program

New Mexico tenants have a valuable opportunity to receive a security deposit grant or past due rent paid, but the help is only available once per applicant.

ESG Move-In Assistance Program

The state of New Mexico operates an Emergency Shelter Grant Move-In Assistance program. This program is funded by federal and state revenues for the purpose of helping lower income New Mexico tenants gain access to safe and affordable housing.

To qualify, you must be considered at risk of becoming homeless. Those who live in a motel or who are currently staying with a relative on a short-term basis may potentially qualify. Even if you are in an apartment or rental home, you could qualify if you have received an eviction notice or are otherwise at risk of becoming evicted.

Security Deposit Grants

Have you found an ideal rental home only to be unable to afford the security deposit and first month’s rent? You could receive a single security deposit grant or funds towards your first month’s rent if it allows you to gain approval for a new lease. This free assistance sure beats a high-priced loan.

The funds are intended to be combined with your own cash reserves so that you are able to satisfy the entire cash move-in requirement of your intended rental. By helping you move into your new place, the state hopes that you will be able to afford your recurring monthly costs so that you stay off of any unnecessary public assistance. Of course, you are still eligible for any public benefits, including help with your monthly utility bills or other assistance.

Help with Back Rent

The state program also provides assistance towards delinquent rent. Again, this is only a one-time opportunity for each applicant.

Preference will be given to applicants who can normally afford their monthly rent and living costs, but fell behind due to a financial crisis that has caused a hardship to the household. If you experienced a recent hardship, you should provide as much documentation as possible to your case manager to make sure that your request receives the highest consideration.

Each agency can accept your application for rental assistance. A case manager will review your qualifications and make sure that you receive the maximum benefits to which you are allotted, including any other rental assistance or security deposit grants for NM residents.
